ODM leader Raila Odinga has hit out at President William Ruto, accusing him of planning to interfere with the 2027 presidential election.
In a Twitter post, the Azimio leader said the move to suspend the four commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission was a scheme by Ruto to rig the 2027 election. The ODM leader vowed not to allow the Kenya Kwanza Alliance government to sabotage future elections.
“The events in parliament yesterday on the formula of appointing IEBC Kenya Commissioners and the hounding of the 4 Commissioners have nothing to do with integrity, but about 2027. Ruto wants to rig the 2027 election in 2022. We should not allow this to happen,” said Raila on Friday, December 2.
The statement by the former prime minister follows a move by Ruto to appoint a tribunal chaired by Judge Aggrey Muchelule to investigate the embattled IEBC Commissioners.
“Having received and considered the petition of the National Assembly and in exercise of the prerogative vested in the Head of State and Government by Article 251 of the Constitution, I do hereby direct as follows: THAT Cherera, Wanderi, Masit and Nyang’aya, being members of the IEBC, be and are hereby suspended from office with immediate effect,” Gazette notice reads.
