Eighteen people were on Wednesday hospitalized after eating meat from a dead cow at Songoliet village in Lemotit location, Kericho County.

The affected persons, among them 10 adults and 8 children, consumed the meat from a cow belonging to one of the villagers who had died on Sunday after being sick for some time.

Lemotit Location Chief Bernard Rono said the owner of the cow had instructed the villagers to slaughter the animal and bury the meat, but some of them allegedly secretly took some parts of the carcass and went on to consume it.

The villagers were then rushed to the Londiani sub-county hospital for treatment after exhibiting food poisoning symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.

Kericho County Health CEC Brenda Bii told Citizen Digital that 12 of those admitted to the facility are presently in stable condition.

Ms. Bii similarly urged residents to refrain from eating meat that has not been inspected by health officials.
Chief Rono further said that remains of the carcass have since been taken to the government chemist for analysis.
