According to Peter Gitonga, he was employed in the construction industry before suddenly losing his job.
After a month of fruitlessly looking for work, he decided to employ himself by roasting maize.

However, a fellow trader encouraged him to roast yams instead because of the higher profit margins. “I have been doing this job for five years, and it has really helped me and my family,” he told NyeriMohoro NewsHub. “I buy a sack of yams for KSh 3,500 and sell it for KSh 7,000,” said Gitonga, adding that he makes up to KSh 3,000 profit in a day.

The businessman said that aside from providing for his wife and kids, selling roasted yams helped him undertake development projects.

“I bought a piece of land and built a shop where my wife works.” According to Gitonga, his wife is contented because he takes good care of the family from the proceeds of his work. “She is very happy.”
