A 35-year-old man was on Wednesday arraigned in Kibera courts for allegedly extorting Sh240 million from Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.

Appearing before Senior Magistrate Ann Mwangi, William Simiyu Matere, alias Elijah, was charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit an offense contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code and soliciting property with threats contrary to Section 302 of the Penal Code.

According to court file E731/24, the defendant, along with others who were not on trial, put together an elaborate extortion scheme on various dates between December 2023 and March 18, when he was arrested and the scheme was foiled.

According to reports, the governor sorted out the spiritual interventions of a man posing as a sorcerer to help him win the governorship election, he was allegedly put through rituals that included his undressing, unknown to him, the whole process was recorded on a secret Camera. It was this footage that was allegedly used to blackmail him.

A CCTV video seen  showing a witch and a naked man who appears to be the complainer showed that it happened on October 5, 2021 during the peak season of the 2022 general elections.

According to the indictment, the governor was constantly threatened by the man and the group for months. Other reports suggest that he has already relented and paid them Sh100 million.

The governor was listed as one of the witnesses along with three others.

He was released on Sh2 million bail with a surety in like sum. The case will be heard on March 28.
