The leader of Haiti’s most dangerous gang, Jimmy Cherizier, nicknamed “Barbecue”, sent a message to the Kenyan police and military on Friday before his deployment.
Barbeque said in a press conference that he will consider the Kenyan police as aggressors and he will stand up for them.
Barbeque called the attackers Kenyan police and said he was not ready to cooperate with them because he believed they would interfere with the independence of Haiti.
“Whatever the Kenyan military or police, I would consider them aggressive,” the group’s leader said.
“We consider them invaders and we should not cooperate with invaders who come to attack our independence,” he said.
However, the leader of the group said that he is ready to end hostilities only if his people are represented in the formation of the transition committee.
According to Barbeque, there have been calls to talk for the past three years, but he insists on continuing the conflict until his demands are met.
The group’s leader said he would seek to eliminate foreign countries trying to join the ongoing hostilities.
“Every new day that passes, you have to come up with a new strategy to move forward,” said Barbecue.
“But there is no peace. In the coming days, things will be worse than they are now, because if they choose not to put everything on the table to talk, the system will be rebuilt,” he said.
The sentiment comes a week after another gang leader, Makandal, was killed along with his accomplices in a fierce shootout with police in the southeastern Caribbean town of Peonville.
A report shared by Haitian police said the leader of the gang was killed after townspeople joined law enforcement in attacking residents and associates of the gang.
