Farmers across the country are counting their losses after being duped into buying subsidized fertilizer only to find they were actually sold sand.
Sand packaged as subsidized fertilizer sold to farmers
An exposé by an African uncensored media company has revealed how some farmers were duped into buying bagged sand instead of subsidized fertiliser.
According to revelations, a company named SBL innovate was allegedly behind the scheme to dupe farmers by selling fake fertilizer known as GPC organic fertilizer.
The packed soil was then allegedly sealed and taken to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) where it was sold to farmers under the National Fertilizer Subsidy Program initiated by the President in 2022.
The fertilizer, allegedly distributed through NCPB, was to be sold at half the market price.
Farmers who fell victim to the scheme have revealed how they calculate their losses after being duped, many now at a loss for what to do.
In response to this revelation, the Kenya National Bureau of Standards (KEBS) took action,
recalling all fertilizer brands distributed by SBL Innovate and canceling their standardization marks.
KEBS Executive Director Esther Ngari announced that tests carried out on 59 samples revealed that the products did not meet the prescribed standards.
“Therefore, we have withdrawn the Standardization brand from SBL Innovate and asked them to withdraw all their products from the market.
We remain committed to ensuring our standards are met to protect the health and well-being of all Kenyans,”
