Ruto’s resignation is now being demanded by Gen Z protesters who are also calling for a reduction in MPs’ pay.

Over the past week, protests against the Finance Bill 2024 have surged, with demonstrators using various social media platforms to voice their frustrations with the government.

These protests have evolved into a broader demand for government accountability, targeting both elected and appointed officials regarding their conduct.

Initially, the Gen Z protesters took to the streets with a clear message: reject the Finance Bill 2024. After sustained pressure, President Ruto was persuaded to reconsider his stance on the bill, which would have increased financial burdens on Kenyans to fund government operations. However, his delayed response allowed for additional issues to surface, leading to a list of demands from the public.

The youth have now set forth demands, with some calling for President Ruto’s resignation.

At the top of their “non-negotiable” list is a call for the Executive to comply with all court orders and eliminate the controversial Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) position. They also demand an end to public funding for the offices of the First Lady, Second Lady, and Prime Cabinet Secretary’s Spouse, suggesting those funds be redirected to hire teachers and doctors.

Additionally, the demands include scrapping the housing levy, publishing audited financial records, and issuing refunds to contributors.

The list calls for the immediate dismissal of government officials with criminal records and integrity issues, the reconstitution of the IEBC within 30 days, and the hiring of JSS teachers and intern doctors.

Protesters are also advocating for reducing MPs’ salaries and allowances, capping them at Ksh.200,000, asserting that MPs should not earn more than doctors, and restoring the school feeding program.

To reduce wastage, it is advised that all government officials use public transportation.

The final demand is for the President to resign from office.Ruto
