Zambia jails 22 Chinese nationals for ‘sophisticated’ multinational cybercrimes
In a significant victory against cross-border cybercrime, a Zambian court has handed down stiff prison sentences to 22 Chinese nationals and one Cameroonian national for their involvement in a sophisticated internet fraud syndicate. The perpetrators, who were part of a larger group of 77 individuals, primarily Zambians, were found guilty of a range of offenses, including internet fraud, online scams targeting victims in Zambia, Singapore, Peru, and the United Arab Emirates, computer-related misrepresentation, identity fraud, and illegally operating a network/service.
The Cybercrime Crackdown
The court’s decision came after authorities in Zambia noticed a spike in cyber-related fraud cases and received numerous complaints from victims who had lost money from their phones and bank accounts. This prompted a targeted investigation, which ultimately led to the raid on the Chinese-run business, Golden Top Support Services.
The Sophisticated Operation
During the raid, authorities uncovered the extensive nature of the criminal enterprise. They recovered over 13,000 local and foreign mobile SIM cards, 2 firearms, and 78 rounds of ammunition from the premises. The investigation revealed that the business had employed young Zambians, aged 20-25, to use the SIM cards to engage in deceptive conversations with unsuspecting mobile users across various platforms, using scripted dialogues to perpetrate their scams.
The Sentences
The court’s response to this large-scale, transnational cybercrime operation was swift and decisive. The Chinese nationals received prison sentences ranging from 7 to 11 years, reflecting the severity of their crimes and the significant harm caused to victims across multiple countries.
