Kirinyaga Funeral Turns Chaotic as Pastor Walks Out Amid Political Tensions

A funeral in Kirinyaga on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, turned chaotic after a scuffle erupted between mourners, politicians, and a presiding pastor. The tension began when the pastor denied politicians affiliated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua an opportunity to speak, leading to protests from their supporters.

Clash Over Speaking Rights

A viral video circulating on social media shows Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina and Senator Kamau Murango confronting the pastor, demanding a platform to address the mourners. Frustrated mourners began singing in unison, escalating tensions further. Unable to regain control, the pastor stormed out of the event.

Another section of the mourners took to the main stage, insisting that the pastor respect their leaders and grant them a chance to speak.

“We will not accept… we will not accept… Give our leaders respect,” some mourners chanted.

Some attendees accused the pastor of being biased and favoring the government side, fueling further unrest.

Pastor Defends His Actions

Addressing reporters from his car after leaving the funeral, the pastor justified his decision, stating that the event was meant to be a solemn occasion, not a political rally.

“This is a funeral ceremony, not a political rally. We are not fighting with them; we respected them and even gave them a chance to speak. Instead of consoling the family, they were settling political scores, which is unacceptable,” the pastor said.

Gachagua’s Allies Speak Out

Following the commotion, the politicians were eventually allowed to speak, with Gachagua addressing the mourners via phone alongside Senator Murango, delivering his remarks in the local dialect.

The incident comes amid rising political tensions in the Mount Kenya region, where MPs allied to Gachagua have accused the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) of targeting them unfairly.

Led by Gatanga MP Edward Muriu, the MPs criticized the NCIC for alleged political bias, claiming it was selectively cracking down on leaders associated with the former deputy president.

“We call on the NCIC to carry out its duties equitably, ensuring that all leaders, regardless of their political affiliations, are held accountable for statements that threaten national unity,” Muriu said.

Tetu MP echoed these sentiments, accusing NCIC of ignoring controversial remarks made by leaders allied with the Kenya First government while unfairly scrutinizing Gachagua’s allies.

The Kirinyaga funeral debacle highlights the deepening rift in the region’s political landscape, as tensions between government and opposition factions continue to escalate.
