One student dead, 33 injured in accident involving bus carrying Chavakali Boys in Kisumu
One student was killed while at least 33 were injured when a bus carrying students of Chavakali Boys High School in Kisumu crashed.
The injured were taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for treatment following the accident on the Kisumu-Kakamega highway on Monday night, police said.
The bus was transporting students to Nairobi after schools closed for the first term. According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control at the Mamboleo roundabout in Kisumu.
Nyanza Regional Transport Commander Allan Mwangi said they are looking for the bus driver for questioning as part of the investigation into the accident.
He said the driver appeared to be going through a roundabout when he lost control of the bus, hit a guardrail and landed on the side of the road.
Just then, the 17-year-old student died on the spot, witnesses said.
Mwangi said the other students sustained minor injuries and were in a stable condition in hospital.
“Parents and guardians of some students have arrived and are looking after them. They are traumatized but they are safe,” he said.
He added that many other parents called to check on the safety of their loved ones.
Students were rescued from the scene by ambulances and good Samaritans.
Police and officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority are involved in a campaign to tackle the menace on the roads.
Since January of this year, more than 1,000 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents.
Dozens more are injured in various places after nursing accidents.
This would indicate that at least 30 people die in accidents every day, officials said.
This has negatively affected many families. Such accidents have a negative impact on families as a whole.
