TRAGEDY IN GILGIL: 16 Students Perish in Utumishi Girls Academy Dormitory Fire
GILGIL, NAKURU COUNTY — A devastating fire ripped through a multi-story dormitory at Utumishi Girls Academy in the early hours of Thursday morning, killing at least 16 students and hospitalizing dozens of others.
The fast-moving inferno broke out shortly before 1:00 AM local time, tearing through the upper level of the building. The affected dormitory, clearly labeled in the file 1000151261.jpg as the Meline Waithera Block, was housing approximately 220 students from Grade 10, Form 3, and Form 4 at the time of the incident.
Emergency Response and Casualties
A massive multi-agency rescue operation was quickly deployed to the scene. Fire brigades from Naivasha were joined by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the National Youth Service (NYS), and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to battle the fierce blaze. Emergency teams from the Kenya Red Cross also rushed to the location to treat survivors and manage the evacuation.
Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Migos Ogamba confirmed the heartbreaking toll:
“We have 16 fatalities. It’s an unfortunate incident… The process of accounting is taking place.”
An additional 79 students suffered injuries. While the majority were treated and discharged from local hospitals within hours, several remain admitted with more severe injuries. First responders noted that panic gripped the top floor, where exit doors were initially locked, forcing several terrified students to leap from the windows to escape the smoke and flames.
Investigation and Community Impact
The school is closely linked to the National Police Service, and the majority of the pupils attending are children of police officers. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen visited the site and called for calm:
“We know that this is a very anxious moment… The cause of the fire has not yet been established.”While official forensic investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are still ongoing, some initial accounts from survivors given to first responders alleged that the fire may have been started using a match and a mattress.
President William Ruto expressed his profound condolences to the nation, stating:
“No words can truly ease the pain of losing young lives filled with promise, hope, and dreams for the future. As a nation, we mourn with the parents, guardians, teachers, and fellow students who are enduring this unimaginable tragedy.”This incident has once again ignited intense public scrutiny over safety regulations, window grills, and emergency escape protocols across boarding schools in Kenya.
