Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) recently made headlines for its decision to distribute part of President William Ruto’s generous gift to its students.
President William Ruto visited the school on 26 March 2024 where he donated 1 million shillings to university students through the Directorate of Students Welfare.
The university then decided to invite students to express their views on how the funds should be used through a Google form survey.
The results showed a close split between the students’ preferences.
51% voted to divide the money equally, 36.4% spoke in favor of organizing lunch and 35.5% proposed to allocate the money to the students.
Respecting the majority vote, the university has announced that every registered undergraduate student during the January to April 2024 semester, including those on industrial detention, will receive Sh180.
To facilitate smooth distribution, class representatives will be collecting money on behalf of their classmates at the DSW office starting April 9, 2024.
The university has also addressed the disposal of any unclaimed money, saying that if it is not claimed by April 19, 2024, it will be transferred to a student bursary.
