Nderitu Maina has been in charge of the Lang’ata Cemetery for 15 years. Over the years, there have been scary stories about the cemetery, ranging from being a haunted place to illegal exhumation of bodies by people eyeing expensive coffins and clothes buried with the deceased. But Maina has come out to demystify all the tales about the cemetery, and in his own words, ‘it is a cool place to work from’.

He spoke to Citizen Digital on why people should not fear the cemetery, what happens when one wants to bury their loved one and the types of graves found in this final resting place for millions of people.

Cemetery is a peaceful place

He urged people not to fear the cemetery and not listen to the lies being perpetrated about Langata cemetery. He added that the place is not haunted and nothing different happens at night.

He clarified that they are temporary graves between two to four feet, while permanent graves have tombstones. Read more:

Lang’ata cemetery is full

Still on Langata cemetery, in 2022, Nairobi chief executive committee member in charge of health Hitan Majevda said Langata cemetery might not accommodate more bodies. Majevda said it might be time for Kenyans to consider alternative ways of resting the departed, like cremation. Most Africans prefer burying their deceased as opposed to cremating them. In 2018, former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko slashed cremation costs to encourage Nairobians to burn their loved ones.
