‘My Life Is In Danger,’ Says Police Officer who allegedly Shot Dead Maseno University Student During Azimio Protests

The officer is being accused of shooting and killing third year Maseno University student Wiliam Mayange on March 20, 2023.
Corporal Osoro wants the IG to give her information regarding her assignment between March 19 – 22, 2023 which was the duration of the demonstrations
In a letter to Inspector General Japhet Koome, Georgina Osoro, a police officer assigned to the Maseno Police Station, claims she is being falsely accused of shooting a college student during the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya mass protests last month.
On March 20, 2023, during the anti-government demonstrations, the officer is accused of shooting and killing third-year Maseno University student Wiliam Mayange.
In the letter, Corporal Osoro requests information from the IG about her assignment between March 19 and March 22, 2023, the dates of the protests, so she can file a lawsuit against her accusers.
She claims that on the day the student was shot dead, she was away on duty in Kisumu, which is approximately 35km from Maseno town.
Corporal Osoro adds that she has been subjected to attacks by members of the public regarding the incident, adding that she fears for her life as she and her children have allegedly been threatened
“It has become extremely difficult for her to work or even send her children to school on account of well founded fears that they shall be harmed,” reads the letter.
Osoro wants the IG to supply the Certified Extract from the Occurrence Book and Certified Extract from the Arms Movement Book Entries for the days of March 19 – 21, and provide the list of police officers assigned coverage on March 20 at Kisumu town.
She also requests that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the National Police Service’s (NPS) Internal Affairs Department move swiftly to investigate the incident and take into account all circumstantial evidence in order to inform the public at large that she was not responsible for the fatal shooting.
