The incident occurred hours after Governor Johnson Sakaja visited a team of firefighters who were injured after responding to a collapsed wall in Kariobangi.

“Our firefighters put a lot on the line to respond to emergencies across the city.

We greatly appreciate their work and sacrifice,” he explained.

“This afternoon I visited two of our officers who were injured in Kariobangi after a wall collapsed in a fire and are recovering in hospital.

The fire is the second major tragedy in Embakasi less than a month after a gas explosion left seven dead and many others injured.

An illegal gas filling facility exploded in early February 2024, affecting nearby residential buildings.

“Government’s relief efforts go beyond immediate shelter needs and focus on long-term support for affected families,” government spokesman Isaac Mwaura told the press at the time.
