One major factor in the rise in new HIV infections in Migori County is the practice of exchanging sex for fish on the county’s beaches.

Paul Obiero, who oversees CIHEB’s fisher folk program in Migori County, stressed how common this practice is and how it puts a lot of fisher folk at risk for HIV/AIDS.
Obiero claims that some women have sex with fisherman not because they want it, but rather because it’s a way to get fish.

He emphasized the continual campaigns to increase awareness along the beaches, which have led to a decline in fish transactional sex because of empowerment programs.
Obiero emphasized the significance of encouraging fishermen to take use of the preventative procedures that are available, as a significant proportion of them are still at risk of HIV/AIDS.
Migori County’s Deputy HIV/AIDS Control Coordinator, Caroline Odera, emphasized the Department of Health’s and its partners’ joint efforts to reduce HIV infections within the fishing community.

Odera cautioned individuals who were at risk about the continued high risk of HIV transmission within the fisher folk community despite these efforts.
