The Form One student was honored for her remarkable achievement in the 3000m barefoot steeplechase at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Nandi County.
In response to her incredible performance, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba visited Lesirwo High School to congratulate and support Mercy, her family, the community and the school.
CS undertook to pay the full tuition fees of all four students who proved to be the best in the competitions. Furthermore, the Ministry offered complete athletic equipment to the students.
“In the spirit of our flagship Talanta Hela, we continue to cover every blade of grass and every grain of sand in identifying nurturing and monetizing talent across all sports,” CS noted.
CS Ababu also ordered the construction of 3 training camps which he said will be dedicated to training for the 3000m steeplechase to regain Kenya’s traditional dominance in the competition.
“It is instructive to note that Lesirwo also provided the foundation for Kenya’s current hottest female 3000m steeplechase, Faith Cherotich, who won bronze at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary last summer at just 19 years old,” CS noted.
