BE WARNED! Government Cautions Kenyans Against Doing This On Social Media

A warning on disclosing personal information without the owner’s consent has been released by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC).

The ODPC claimed in a statement on Wednesday, June 19, that Kenyans are disclosing private information on social media without the owner’s permission.
Names, phone numbers, addresses, and information about their family members are among the data classified as personal, according to the ODPC.
“ODPC has established that there has been a recent trend of consolidating and sharing of personal information (names, telephone numbers, location and details of family members) of a certain category of citizens through social media platforms,” the statement read partly.
In addition, the Commissioner stated that the practice has been carried out against the restrictions of Article 31 of the Kenyan Constitution, the Data Protection Act, 2019, and its implementing rules, all without the agreement of the impacted persons.
“Considering the aforementioned, the Office would like to recommend that the public abstain from disseminating personal information in the future as it violates the privacy rights of individuals,” the Commissioner stated.
