Chief Justice Martha Koome demands the return of the security of Judge Lawrence Mugambi

Mugambi’s bodyguards were allegedly removed after he sentenced Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli to six months in prison.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has urged the National Police Service to promptly reinstate Justice Lawrence Mugambi’s security officers.

The judge’s bodyguards were allegedly removed after he sentenced Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli to six months in prison.

The Chief Justice expressed alarm about the charges on Monday, saying it is only one of many issues that keep her awake at night.

In a discussion with journalists at the Supreme Court, Koome, the Chairman of the Judicial Services Commission (JSC), strongly condemned the act of intimidation and promised Kenyans that they would continue to stand firm no matter what happens.

“It is important to remember that judicial independence is not the right of Judges; it is the basis of justice for all citizens. Judges must be free to make decisions based only on the law, without fear of punishment or interference,” said Koome.

“Any interference with this freedom puts our society at risk of falling into lawlessness, where it can take the place of justice, and justice is distorted by threats,” she added.

The court’s declaration comes after Masengeli was convicted and condemned by the Judge for contempt of court.

On Friday, Justice Mugambi ordered him to report to the Chief Commissioner of Prisons.

“If it happens, he will not present himself, the Minister of the Interior must take all measures to ensure that he is imprisoned to serve his sentence,” said the Judge.

Mugambi, on the other hand, stated that if Masengeli appears in court within the next seven days, he may avoid serving the punishment.
