Albert Korir Hit With Doping Ban as Athletics Body Opens Investigation

Albert Korir has been temporarily suspended over a banned substance claim. The decision was announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit this week.

Kenyan long-distance runner Albert Korir is facing fresh trouble after being provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

The decision, made public on Monday, January 12, stops the 31-year-old from taking part in any marathon events as investigations continue.

According to the AIU, Korir is accused of using Continuous Erythropoietin Receptor Activator, commonly known as CERA.

The drug is a modern form of EPO and is banned because it increases red blood cells, giving athletes unfair stamina and endurance advantages.

In its notice, the AIU confirmed that Korir is under suspension for the presence or use of a prohibited substance.

The ban remains in force until the case is fully heard and a final decision is made under World Athletics and WADA regulations.

Korir is well known on the global stage. He won the New York City Marathon in 2021 and later claimed bronze in the 2025 edition of the same race.

He has also finished second in New York twice, in 2019 and 2023, building a strong reputation as one of Kenya’s top marathoners.

If the allegations are confirmed, Korir could face a long ban from the sport.

His past results may be cancelled, and he risks losing prize money and ranking points, including the KSh 5.1 million he earned from his recent New York podium finish.

The suspension comes at a time when Kenya’s athletics scene is dealing with several doping cases.

Recent bans, including that of world marathon record holder Ruth Chepng’etich, have increased pressure on athletes and officials to tighten controls and protect the sport’s image.

For now, Korir remains sidelined as the investigation continues.

The outcome of the case is expected to have a major impact, not only on his career but also on ongoing efforts to clean up athletics in Kenya.
