TVETA Orders Immediate Closure of All Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) Campuses Nationwide

Nairobi, April 20, 2026 In a major regulatory crackdown, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) has revoked the accreditation of the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) and ordered the immediate closure of all its campuses across the country.

The directive, issued via a public notice dated Monday, April 20, 2026, invokes Sections 36 and 37 of the TVET Act (Cap 210A). TVETA accused KIM of operating beyond its approved mandate by offering and awarding unaccredited academic and professional programmes, as well as engaging unlicensed trainers.

KIM operates approximately 13 physical campuses and one online branch in major towns including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, and Nakuru. The institution has long been a popular choice for management, business, and vocational courses in Kenya.

Key Violations Cited by TVETA
According to the authority, KIM was found to have:
– Offered programmes without necessary approvals.
– Awarded certificates, diplomas, and other qualifications without legal mandate.
– Employed trainers lacking valid licenses.

As a result, TVETA has declared that qualifications issued by KIM after 2018 are not legally recognized for purposes of employment, further education, or professional advancement. Pre-2018 certificates appear unaffected based on current reports.

The regulator has strongly warned the public against enrolling in any KIM programmes and urged prospective students to always verify an institution’s accreditation status directly with TVETA before committing time or fees.

Impact on Students and Alumni
The sudden closure has left thousands of current students in limbo, with ongoing classes, examinations, and admissions now halted. Many alumni who graduated after 2018 face uncertainty regarding the validity of their certificates for job applications or further studies.

TVETA’s move is part of broader efforts to safeguard the quality and integrity of technical and vocational education in Kenya. However, it has sparked immediate concern among affected learners and their families.

KIM’s Response
In a statement issued shortly after the notice, KIM acknowledged the TVETA directive and confirmed it is actively reviewing the contents while engaging with the relevant regulatory authorities to resolve the matter.

“We wish to assure our stakeholders students, alumni, partners, and the general public that we are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness,” the institution said. “We urge our stakeholders to remain calm and rely on official communication channels for accurate updates.”

KIM has reassured students and partners that it is seeking a swift and lawful resolution.

Affected students are advised to:
– Contact KIM directly for guidance on transfers, refunds, or recognition of prior learning.
– Reach out to TVETA for clarification on certificate validity.
– Monitor official websites: [TVETA (tveta.go.ke)](https://www.tveta.go.ke) and [KIM (kim.ac.ke)](https://www.kim.ac.ke).

Education stakeholders expect possible transitional arrangements or appeals that could influence the final outcome.

The closure highlights ongoing regulatory scrutiny in Kenya’s TVET sector, aimed at ensuring institutions meet national standards and protect learners from substandard qualifications.
