President William Ruto has unveiled a series of multi-billion shilling development projects in Kisii and Nyamira counties, reaffirming the government’s commitment to inclusive growth under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
During his visit to Kisii State Lodge, the President met over 2,000 grassroots leaders from Kisii and Nyamira, emphasizing the importance of continuous consultation in strengthening the broad-based government.
“We are strengthening the broad-based government through continuous consultation with grassroots and elected leaders. This ensures our decisions reflect the realities of our people,” said President Ruto.
He further called for unity between United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), stating that cooperation between the two parties is key to national stability and development.
Multi-Billion Investments
The President announced that the government has committed KSh15 billion towards affordable housing, modern markets, and student hostels in Nyamira County alone.
Among the key allocations:
KSh2.5 billion to construct 22 modern markets in Kisii County, aimed at supporting traders and reducing post-harvest losses
KSh1.3 billion for hostels accommodating up to 3,000 students in Nyamira under the Affordable Housing Programme
KSh500 million for the construction of Nyamira University College, plus KSh300 million for student hostels
KSh900 million for a modern stadium in Nyamira County
KSh1 billion for upgrading Nyamira County Referral Hospital
Additionally, KSh300 million has been allocated for a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station in Ikonge.
Key Projects Launched and Inspected
During the tour, President Ruto launched and inspected several development projects, including:
Construction of Nyakoe Modern Market and Kegogi Modern Market in Kisii, each expected to accommodate over 300 traders
Commissioning of the Ikonge Modern Market in Nyamira, valued at KSh70 million, with capacity for 200 traders
Groundbreaking of a 580-capacity hostel at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nyamira, alongside plans for 20 classrooms and five laboratories
Expansion of Nyamira University College, including lecture halls, laboratories, a library, and a medical centre
Infrastructure Development
On infrastructure, the government highlighted ongoing and upcoming road projects, including:
The 61km Eronge–Kebuse–Omonyenya road, currently 58% complete
Manga–Motemomwamu road, at 38% completion
Planned launch of Keumbo–Kiendege road
Upcoming construction of Chabera–Nyamusi–Nyamaiya and Tombe–Isinta–Gitaru roads
Focus on Economic Transformation
The President noted that these projects are part of a broader plan to transform the Gusii region through investments in housing, trade, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“Our goal is to unite the country around a shared development agenda and ensure no region or Kenyan is left behind,” he stated.
Leaders present, including Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, welcomed the projects, expressing optimism that they will boost local economies and improve livelihoods.
