Tragic Building Collapse in the Philippines Leaves One Dead, Dozens Trapped Under Rubble
ANGELES CITY, Philippines A devastating early-morning disaster struck a crowded commercial district on Sunday when a nine-story building under construction collapsed onto itself and an adjacent lodging house. The catastrophic failure has left at least one person dead, dozens injured, and approximately 20 workers and bystanders trapped beneath a mountain of twisted metal and heavy concrete slabs.
A Dawn of Terror
The collapse occurred before dawn, at around 2:30 a.m. local time, following a night of fierce thunderstorms, heavy rains, and strong winds that pummeled Pampanga province.
According to local authorities, the building was intended to be a nine-story condo-hotel. However, preliminary reports indicate that an unapproved 10th floor was being constructed to house a swimming pool just before the structural failure occurred.
Because the disaster happened in the dead of night, many of the construction workers were asleep on the ground floor of the site. Nearby residents reported hearing what sounded like an earthquake, followed by a deafening roar as the building’s walls and scaffolding buckled, sending debris crushing down onto adjacent structures.
The Casualties and the Missing
Angeles City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin confirmed that 26 people have been successfully pulled from the wreckage or managed to dash to safety in the immediate aftermath. Many of the survivors sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
Tragically, the collapse partially crushed a neighboring budget hotel. Officials from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) confirmed that a 65-year-old Malaysian tourist staying at the lodging house was killed. Another guest was injured by the falling debris.
As of Sunday evening, search and rescue operations are frantically underway to locate at least 20 people who remain unaccounted for. Among those missing are the construction workers and a local couple who operated a small food and coffee cart positioned right beside the building.
Desperate Race Against Time
More than 700 rescuers, including firefighters, police, and specialized disaster-response teams, have converged on the scene. Using advanced listening devices, sniffer dogs, and their bare hands to avoid shifting the unstable rubble, rescue teams are working in dangerous conditions.
Fire Superintendent Maria Lea Sajili reported that rescuers have managed to make contact with at least two trapped workers who are alive beneath the concrete slabs. Teams are working meticulously to create a safe passage to pull them out.
Meanwhile, heavily distressed families and relatives have gathered at the perimeter, weeping and praying as they wait for any word of their loved ones. “This is the worst day of our lives,” said Joamel Angcao, an 18-year-old student whose parents are among those trapped under the debris.
Investigation Pending
The exact cause of the collapse remains under investigation. Engineers and local government officials are expected to look closely into the structural integrity of the project, the impacts of the severe weather, and whether the addition of the 10th floor breached safety permits and overloaded the building’s foundation.
Rescuers emphasize that the next 24 hours are critical as they continue to search for signs of life.
